In our last article, we talked about the origins behind our desire to see the god game genre reborn. Today, we’re going to introduce in full our vision for Apeiron, the world’s first blockchain-based god game.
Apeiron’s gameplay is built upon three pillars: god game simulation, action roleplaying game, and NFT star ownership, all of which feed into a Roguelike planetary cycle like that you can see in Slay the Spire. There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s get right to it. We’ll start with the god game simulation.
In Apeiron, you are a Wandering God, represented in game as an ethereal Spirit Core. As you enter the Apeiron universe for the first time, you’ll be able to embody your Spirit Core and inhabit an EDEN — mysterious structures for channeling divine power — on a planet full of Doods.
Doods are chubby little guys — cute, but dumb. More than anything, they want to see you perform Miracles. Starting with the four elements of earth, air, water, and fire, you can shape and reshape the planet to your liking. The Doods will see what you’re doing and respond in kind — if you listen to their prayers and fulfill their desires, you’ll be able to convert them into your Followers.
There’s a little more to it than that, of course (like how you can combine miracles or the tricky environmental puzzles and mysteries, or the good and evil alignment system), but that’s good enough for now. So now you’ve converted a bunch of Doods into Followers, and they’re slowly building up a society in your holy name. Once you reach a certain threshold, you’ll be able to awaken the planet’s Avatar. Here’s where the action adventure game begins: you can take your Spirit Core and assume direct control of the Avatar to explore the galaxy.
While inhabiting the Avatar, you won’t be able to command the elements on a planetary scale, but can move around and interact with the environment directly. Followed by zealous Dood Apostles, you’ll take your Avatars into dungeons in your world and beyond for hidden treasures and learning the secrets of the universe.
But just because you’ve unlocked the Avatar, doesn’t mean you can’t still jump back into your EDEN. Anytime you want, you can switch your Spirit Core back into the planet’s EDEN and start god gaming again. And you’ll want to be going back and forth between the two, unlocking treasures to improve your godly powers and miracles, getting new Followers and more power and then going into deeper dungeons and so on. The two modes are not separate but linked, where power in one feeds into power in the other.
It’s the Cycle of Life
Eventually you’ll max out your planet’s power, and here the game unfolds another layer. You can reset your planet — through an Armageddon event — and you’ll get a bunch of Soul Gems, which you can use to upgrade your Spirit Core. Then you start the cycle once again, but now — more powerful.
When you reset, you’ll also be presented with the opportunity to convert in-game items and objects or Dood Apostles into Relics NFTs: by converting them into NFTs, you can preserve them for future runs, or even sell them on the marketplace. Notably, the planets are NFTs too. Tired of playing around with this particular world? Sell it! It’s yours to do with what you want.
You could also decide to “breed” your planets: through a holy event known as a Celestial Conjunction, you can take the essence of two planets and combine them to produce a third, new world. Use this new world to start a new gameplay cycle, or offer it out on the marketplace, or use it for further breeding. Each planet has its own traits and elemental distributions: by cleverly combining one world with another, you’ll eventually be able to breed “perfect” worlds.
During this whole process, you’ll be earning tokens to help make more Relic and Planet NFTs. Whatever you earn is yours to do with what you will: you have control over your game assets. Play to earn: farm some tokens by running through dungeons, discover unique artifacts, and then cash out on the Apeiron marketplace.
But if you’re interested in getting more bang for your buck, consider getting ownership of a Star. A Star allows Planets to orbit around them for awesome passive bonuses. Rare Stars may also come with explorable Celestial Objects such as asteroid belts, dark nebulae and mini black holes which player Avatars can investigate for special rewards. Plus, if other players come into your system, you’ll get a cut of any of their activity! You can purchase Stars via Stella Tabula chests, which also has the chance to come with other sweet loot inside as well — but supply of the chests will be limited, so get in while you can! We’ll let you know as soon as they go on sale.
Past and Future
When we started this journey, we were looking back over our shoulders, nostalgic for the past. But Apeiron isn’t the past, it’s the future: a blockchain game that stands on the shoulders of giants, on the history of the god games that came before, but also joins the metaverse, representing a better tomorrow for gamers everywhere — one where ownership is open and shared rather than centralized and limited.
Apeiron is in development now as the first blockchain-based god game for browsers, PC and Mobile. We’ve got a lot of work to do, and we hope you’ll hold us accountable to our vision — trust that we won’t deliver anything less. See you in Apeiron — we can’t wait to see the universe that we’re going to build together. Join us on Twitter and stay tuned to the latest updates!
